Baby boy born prematurely after mother's fatal shooting dies

Qualecia James 7 months pregnant at time of shooting

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The child of a pregnant woman who was shot and killed in Miami Gardens last weekend has died.

Miami Gardens police said the baby boy of Qualecia James died Friday afternoon.

The shooting happened shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday on Northwest 32nd Avenue near Northwest 182nd Street.

Police said the 21-year-old expecting mother was in a silver sedan when an unknown vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire before driving off.

When police arrived, officers found James in the bullet-riddled car. She was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead.

James was seven months pregnant.

Doctors delivered the baby prematurely. He had been in the neonatal unit.
