Mom, 6-week-old baby fall through dock in Deerfield Beach

Sheriff's spokeswoman: Baby flown to hospital as precaution

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – A 6-week-old baby was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon as a precaution after falling through a dock in Deerfield Beach.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, the 41-year-old mother and her baby were on the dock of the home, which sits on the Intracoastal Waterway, when they fell into the water after wooden planks gave way.

Both were out of the water before rescuers arrived.

A spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office said the baby was flown to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale but is going to be OK. The mother was taken by ambulance to the same hospital and is also expected to be OK.

"The baby's injuries are not that bad," BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella said. "They are just doing it as a preventive measure."

It appeared that the dock was partially rotted.
