MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Two people were injured after a small boat crashed into a seawall at the U.S. Coast Guard station in Miami Beach on Friday morning.
The crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. at the Coast Guard station near the MacArthur Causeway.
Surveillance video captured the crash, and it appeared that the boat did not slow down before hitting the seawall.
Coast Guard officials could be seen running to the rescue immediately after the crash and tended to the victims until paramedics arrived.
According to a Coast Guard spokesman, a man and a woman were on the boat.
Nightlife executive Michael Capponi, 42, was one of the victims. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.
The woman on the boat was also taken to JMH in critical condition with head injuries. She was identified as friend Brooke Biederman.
Capponi has been dubbed "the godfather of Miami nightlife" for his revitalization of South Beach, and he was named Miami's best nightlife promoter by the Miami New Times in 2004. He was instrumental in providing relief for Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but a family friend told Local 10 News that it was "100 percent an accident" and no drugs or alcohol were involved.
