Police say red Volkswagen struck child

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police are looking for the driver of a red Volkswagen that witnesses say struck a 3-year-old boy Tuesday night.

The incident happened at 6:06 p.m. Tuesday in the 5200 block of Northeast 18th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

According to Fort Lauderdale police, the toddler ran from the sidewalk in front of his home and into the southbound lanes of Northeast 18th Avenue.

Afterwards, police said the boy was struck by a red Volkswagen Beetle that was traveling southbound along the street.

The front end of the Volkswagen struck the child, sending him to the ground. Fort Lauderdale police said the driver of the vehicle did not stop and continued to drive southbound on Northeast 18th Avenue.

The child sustained serious injuries and was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he is currently listed in serious condition, said police.

A good Samaritan who witnessed the crash provided investigators with the suspect vehicle's Florida license plate. Investigators believe an unidentified witness followed the suspect's vehicle and ultimately spoke to the unknown driver, said police.

Police said this is an active and on-going investigation. Traffic Homicide Investigators are urging anyone who may have information regarding the driver of this vehicle to contact Investigator Jill Hirsch at 954-828-5753.
