MIAMI – A sixth-grade boy is speaking out after authorities say he was shot at a local middle school.
His leg is now in a cast, but D'Angelo Marte is alive after being shot in school just two days ago.
"I'm going to have to walk on crutches and use a wheelchair," said Marte.
Marte was in history class at Redland Middle School on Friday when a classmate's gun accidentally fired.
Police said the weapon was tucked in the backpack of another middle school student, and when the bag hit the ground, it caused the gun to fire.
Local 10's Terrell Forney reports two students used their own clothes to try to stop the bleeding.
"He lost a lot of blood as it was, and if wasn't for them, who knows how much more," said D'Angelo's grandmother, Cindy.
Cindy didn't want her face shown as the pair left Miami Children's Hospital on Sunday evening.
It's been a long weekend for the 12 year old and his family, receiving tough news from doctors about the gunshot.
"It was a through and through. It was not a graze like it was reported," said Cindy. "It went through the front of the knee, out the back of the knee and up the thigh."
Still, the sixth grader said he is determined to make the most of a bad situation.
"I'm good," said Marte.
