FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward County commissioners will finalize a new ordinance on October 13th for ride-sharing services, such as Uber and Lyft.
This comes after Thursday's meeting of almost eight hours was not enough to reach an agreement.
The ordinance includes "requirements for background checks, vehicle inspections and liability insurance, but shift the procedural responsibility for enforcement to the transportation network companies with strict county oversight," according to a news release.
Commissioners approved the proposed ordinance with a majority vote. Commissioners Lois Wexler, Barbara Sharief and Dale V.C. Holness voted against the ordinance.
The amended ordinance comes after Uber suspended its service in Broward County on July 31 after the county passed new requirements for ride-sharing drivers, including county background checks and a mandatory chauffeur's license.
County officials said while the new ordinance still requires background checks, the checks can be processed through the county or a third party without the need for fingerprinting.
The ride-sharing companies must also provide proper accommodations for disabled passengers.
Commissioners said fees for dropping off and picking up passengers at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades still need to be negotiated.
