Broward County resident sentenced in tax fraud scheme

Julio Lugo, 38, convicted of using stolen identities to file fraudulent tax returns

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ A Broward County resident was sentenced to more than five years in federal prison for filing fraudulent tax returns while operating various tax preparation businesses.

Julio Lugo, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the government with respect to claims and one count of aggravated identity theft.

According to court documents, Lugo operated several businesses including, #1 Tax Specialist, The Number One Tax Specialist, Number Two Tax Specialist and Light House Refund.

While operating Light House Refund, Lugo filed 48 fraudulent tax returns using stolen identities, and received tax refunds that were not for him.

Another man convicted in the case, Jamar James, was sentenced to two years of probation. James pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement to a federal agency.

Lugo was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release.
