POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A Broward Sheriff's deputy who died as a result of injuries he sustained when his cruiser veered off I-95 and hit a tree on Sept. 11 will be laid to rest Friday.
Deputy Daniel Rivera was headed to the Pompano Beach substation when he crashed his patrol car into a palm tree south of Copans Road. He had been in critical condition at Broward Health North Hospital where he died Saturday night.
"Everything Danny did, he did with honor, he did with courage, and he did with a smile on his face," Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said during the service.
On Friday morning, Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued the following statement:
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of Deputy Sheriff Daniel Rivera, who served 10 years with the Broward County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Rivera lost his life on Saturday, September 21, 2013, from injuries sustained in a vehicle crash.
In honor of Deputy Sheriff Daniel Rivera, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the County Courthouse of Broward County, Florida, the City Hall of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Broward County Sheriff's Office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and at all Broward County Sheriff's District Offices from sunrise to sunset on Friday, September 27, 2013."
