About 10,000 children sent to ER each year in Florida due to sparkler-related injuries

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. -

As the Fourth of July approaches, the Broward Sheriff's Office wants you to be prepared and safe when handling fireworks.

The biggest thing to remember is most fireworks are illegal, so make sure you know what to look for.

"If it leaves the ground or explodes, it's illegal in the state of Florida," said one deputy during a safety demonstration Tuesday.

Even the legal ones, such as sparklers, can be dangerous, especially around children.

Authorities say there are about 10,000 kids sent to the emergency in Florida each year due to sparkler-related injuries.
