BSO: Teen arrested for bus stop shooting

Deputies say 17-year-old David Barton was attempting to shoot boy

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Detectives say they have arrested a teenager accused of shooting at a group of students congregating Friday morning at a school bus stop in West Park.

The shooting happened Friday morning on Southwest 52nd Avenue, south of Hallandale Beach Boulevard and just past Watkins Elementary School.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, David Barton, 17, was attempting to shoot at a boy who was walking toward the bus stop behind 17-year-old Makeda Elliott.

Deputies said at least four shots were fired, one of which grazed Elliott in the neck.

About a dozen other teens scrambled as they heard the shots fired just after 6:30 a.m. Deputies said the elementary school had not yet opened for the school day at the time of the incident.

Elliott called her dad to notify him of the incident and her father took her to Jackson North Medical Center in Dade County. Deputies said Elliott was then taken to Ryder Trauma Center where she was treated and released.

Detectives went to Hallandale High School to speak with potential witnesses. Evidence at the scene and witness statements helped detectives zero in on Barton as the suspect.

Deputies said Barton was taken into custody at the school and will face charges of premeditated attempted murder, felony murder and shooting at an occupied dwelling.

No one else was injured in Friday morning's incident.

Anyone who was in the area or has any information about the shooting is asked to call BSO Violent Crimes Det. Timothy Metz at 954-321-4224 or Broward Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 954-493-TIPS (8477). Deputies said a reward of up to $3,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.
