Cash tolls ending on Dolphin Expressway

Tolls cost will remain the same

MIAMI – After decades of workers manning the tollbooths on State Road 836 near Northwest 17th Avenue in Miami, drivers will only be able to pay electronically beginning this weekend.

The famed tollbooth, which has stood watch on the Dolphin Expressway near what was the Orange Bowl and is now Marlins Park, will transform to SunPass-only on Sunday.

The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) said the closure of the cash lanes and eventual removal of the toll booths will eliminate the hassles of stop-and-go driving and merging in and out of traffic as drivers approach the toll plaza.

The MDX said tolls at the plaza will remain at the current $1 rate for SunPass users and $2 for toll-by-plate drivers.

With toll-by-plate, a picture is taken of the license plate and a bill for the unpaid toll is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle.
