Cat gets name after being rescued from pipe in Miami

'Piper' being treated at animal hospital before being placed for adoption

MIAMI ā€“ Veterinarians at Knowles Animal Clinic have given a cat that was stuck in a pipe for days a name -- "Piper."

"We think it's appropriate," Dr. Emily C. Abraham told Local 10 News. "He's a survivor."

Piper was rescued from a pipe underneath a Walgreens at Northwest Seventh Street and 57th Avenue in Miami. Firefighters spent most of Tuesday trying to save the cat after residents heard him crying.

"Considering where he came from and how long he was there, it's definitely shocking how well he's doing," Abraham said.

She said there was no evidence of fluid in the cat's lungs or any broken bones.

"He's doing fantastic," Abraham said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews were eventually able to flush Piper out of the pipe, all the while keeping track of him with small cameras that they fed underground.

"If he hasn't used eight-and-a-half of his nine lives, I would be shocked," Lt. Lisa Wood said. "We ran probably 3,000 gallons of water through those pipes trying to get him out."

But before Piper can be adopted, doctors want to make sure he is healthy.

"We want to have him up to date on vaccines and neutered before we find him a home," Abraham said.Ā
