Coast Guardsman sentenced to 2 years on sexual assault charge

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A Coast Guardsman on trial for a sexual assault charge was sentenced by a military judge to two years confinement, a dishonorable discharge and reduction in pay-grade after pleading guilty at a general court-martial, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Authorities said 30-year-old Coast Guard Petty Officer Tyler A. Banks pleaded guilty to one specification of sexual assault in violation of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice Article 120 as part of a pretrial agreement.

Banks was assigned to Coast Guard Base in Miami Beach at the time the assault occurred, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Officials said Rear Adm. Thomas Jones, director of operational logistics in Norfolk, Va., is the convening authority for the court-martial.
