Courtroom drama: Skype calls interrupt defense attorney

Day 8 of George Zimmerman trial

SANFORD, Fla. – In a clumsy move, attorneys in the George Zimmerman trial displayed a witness' Skype call's contact information on national TV Wednesday.

Zimmerman's criminal justice college professor Gordon Pleasants was testifying from Colorado, where he is vacationing. Prosecutor Richard Mantei questioned him with some audio difficulties.

But when it was defense attorney Mark O'Mara's turn to question Pleasants, the noise in the room was that of a video game.  With his Skype name on display, callers began to interrupt O'Mara.

Pleasants was smiling, as both Mantei and O'Mara tried to figure out what was causing the noise.

"There is now a really good chance that we are being toyed with," O'Mara said.

There was laughter in the courtroom, as the number of callers increased -- and the rhythmic pop-up sound got faster.

Judge Debra Nelson did not find humor in the disruption, and asked attorneys to hang up the Skype call and use a good old fashioned land line.

Zimmerman could be facing life in prison if found guilty of second-degree murder.
