Davie residents upset over Jazzerciser's contract

Town council takes Fran Anderson's Jazzercise contract out of David Flaherty's control

DAVIE, Fla. – In February, Davie Parks and Recreation Director David Flaherty extended a town contract to Fran Anderson to teach Jazzercise classes. A month later, they got married.

"This blatant disregard for town policy and protocol needs to stop," said town activist Karen Stenzel-Nowicki. "This was no secret to anyone in town hall."

Davie Mayor Judy Paul said she found out about Flaherty and Anderson's romance when they got married.

"You didn't see a conflict with a husband supervising his wife?" I asked.

"Well, we understand there was and that's why it was brought to light," replied Paul.

When I went to speak to Flaherty on Monday, I instead got his secretary. She said he'd be available about 2 p.m. When I came back, he was at lunch.

"So instead of meeting with us he went out to lunch?"

"You put words in my mouth. I didn't say that," said Flaherty's secretary.

"Well, that's what happened."

Last week, the town council voted to take Anderson's Jazzercise contract out of Flaherty's control. No further investigation is planned.

Paul said the contract, which ends in September, may be put up for bid then.

"I think it should definitely go out to bid and I think it should go out to the general public," said Stenzel-Nowicki.
