OAKLAND PARK, Fla. -

A man was shot and killed Sunday morning as he drove onto Interstate 95 from Commercial Boulevard, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened Sunday morning on the southbound on-ramp at Commercial Boulevard and I-95 in Oakland Park.

Around 6:40 a.m., BSO's communications department received 911 calls from motorists reporting shots fired on the highway.

All southbound lanes of the highway were closed for nearly three hours, according to deputies, while BSO detectives from the crime scene, homicide and traffic homicide units conducted their investigation.

Local 10's Terrell Forney reports the man's car charred from flames and was likely hit with several bullets.

The driver was found dead inside his car, said deputies. His body was carried away from the scene late Sunday morning.

Witnesses driving south on I-95 were the first to call for help.

"Arriving deputies found that a man had been shot in his vehicle, that silver Buick crashed into a guardrail and it caught fire," said Dani Moschella of the Broward Sheriff's Office.

It's unclear if the man, who was alone in the car, died from the fire or his bullet wounds. However, police are certain that those shots came from someone in another car, a car that never stopped after committing the crime.

Waffle House Just around the corner near Commercial Boulevard and Powerline Road, detectives honed in on a Waffle House. They interviewed employees there who appeared to be startled and then combed over the eatery for possible clues.

"We are trying to figure out what started this shooting," said Moschella.

Investigators want to know if something at the all-night eatery sparked Sunday's chain of events. Detectives are not saying much about how the two scenes may be tied together, but they are working with multiple witnesses at each location.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Det. Brian Tutler at 954-321-4281, or report anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers of Broward County at 954-493-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be left online at www.browardcrimestoppers.org.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
