Dogs transferred to Broward County shelter from Puerto Rico due to storm

About 40 dogs to be put up for adoption

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – About 40 dogs are being transferred from the Save-A-Sato group in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to the Humane Society of Broward County because of the potential impact of Tropical Storm Erika on the island.

Some of the animals arrived Wednesday morning at Miami International Airport. The others will fly out Thursday morning.

"We are fortunate that we have the space available to assist the Save-A-Sato group and hope their facility is not damaged in the upcoming storm," Mary Steffen, HSBC senior vice president of operations, said.

All the dogs are expected to be put up for adoption by Thursday.

Those who are interested in adopting a pet are asked to visit the shelter at 2070 Griffin Road. Adoptions are available daily beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The adoption costs range between $100 and $235, depending on the dog's age.

The adoption fee includes vaccines, and the dogs being spayed/neutered and microchipped.
