Duo steals cash, jewelry from elderly woman in Pembroke Pines

Suspects convince 83-year-old woman into giving them cash, merchandise, jewelry in scheme

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. ā€“ Police are asking for the public's help in finding two women accused of stealing $8,500, merchandise and jewelry from an 83-year-old woman.

The 83-year-old woman was shopping Wednesday in the Sedano's Plaza on Pines Boulevard. As she approached one of the stores, police said she was stopped by a female suspect (pictured, right).

The suspect said that she had a winning lottery ticket and needed help in claiming the prize, adding that she was "undocumented" and could not come forward to claim the winnings, according to police. She then needed two people to help her in getting the money.

For her help, police said the suspect offered the woman $30,000 once the money was collected.

At that time, a second female suspect approached, pretending to have overheard the conversation, and also offered to help. She, along with the other suspect, were then able to convince the 83-year-old woman to help in obtaining the money.

Once the woman agreed to help, police said the suspects said that they needed a sign of "good faith" in order to give her the $30,000.

Subsequently, the two suspects entered the woman's car and were driven by the woman to several locations in Pembroke Pines, according to police.

Authorities said the suspects were able to convince the woman to make a cash withdrawal from her personal account and turn the money over to the first female suspect.

Additionally, they drove to several stores where police said the suspects selected merchandise and had the victim pay for it.

In between one of the trips to the store, police said the woman drove the suspects to her apartment and agreed to give them all of her jewelry.

After the last transaction, the woman drove the suspects back to the Sedano's lot. The suspects said that they needed to go in the store for some food, and asked the woman to wait in the car. Police said neither suspect returned.

In all, police said the two female suspects stole from the 83-year-old woman $8,500 in cash, $6,500 in merchandise and $3,000 in jewelry.

The two suspects were described by Pembroke Pines police as 28- to 35-year-old black, Hispanic women. The woman wearing a green shirt and white pants (pictured, below) is 5 foot 4 inches tall, weighs about 140 pounds, and has blonde hair. Police said the second woman is 5 foot 2 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds, and wore a multi-colored shirt and dark pants.
