Elderly couple rushed to hospital after house fire

Firefighters deem house total loss

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – An early morning fire sent an elderly couple to the hospital Saturday.

The fire broke out around 6 a.m. Saturday in the 6500 block of Pierce Street in Hollywood. When Hollywood Fire Rescue arrived, the home was fully engulfed.

Fire rescue says it appears the fire started in the back of the home.

It took a crew of about 40 people 45 minutes to put out the fire. Throughout the morning, some stayed behind, making sure to put out any hot spots.

An elderly couple was sleeping inside at the time the fire broke out. Fire rescue says the man woke up to heavy smoke in the home. He then woke up his wife and the two managed to get out.

The woman suffered severe smoke inhalation. Both were checked out by paramedics on the scene, but were quickly transported to the hospital to be treated.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but an investigation is underway. The home is a total loss.
