Family members not sure how 3-year-old girl shot

Girl recovering at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A 3-year-old girl is recovering at a South Florida hospital after she was shot Wednesday night, her family told Local 10 News.

The girl, identified by her great grandparents as Sanah Dupont, was taken to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital to be treated for a single gunshot wound.

Miramar police said the shooting happened in the Silver Falls neighborhood on Southwest 132nd Way.

Police said the girl's mother called 911, but the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

"Obviously, it's quite troubling that the 3-year-old was shot under any circumstances," Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues told Local 10. "However, we can't really speculate at present time as to what exactly occurred."

A man claiming to be the girl's godfather told Local 10 the shooting was accidental as he arrived at the hospital Wednesday night.

The girl's great grandfather said she is no longer in the intensive care unit.

"I have no idea," Herb Raines said when asked how the girl might have been shot.

Police said they are in the process of speaking to everyone who was inside the home at the time of the shooting.

No arrests or criminal charges have been filed at this time.
