FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The 24th annual Fleet Week started at Port Everglades Monday, with the arrival of USS New York. Hundreds of service members will participate in the U.S. Navy's largest community outreach program through May 5.
The arrival of the USS New York early Monday marked the start of the event. The vessel is comprised of 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center. Three South Florida residents and former NYPD 9/11 first responders were invited to ride the ship from the Naval Station Mayport to Port Everglades.

Later Monday, the USCGC Bernard C. Webber will arrive in Port Everglades followed by the USCGC Dependable on Friday. All three vessels will stay at the port through next Monday.

The week-long celebration honors the men and women of various military organizations through public events and recognition. Those being honored will also participate in various outreach projects throughout the week.
