FPL installs hurricane-proof power poles

55-foot concrete poles able to withstand category 5 hurricane-force winds

SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. – Florida Power & Light crews on Tuesday began installing 55-foot concrete poles that can withstand category 5 hurricane-force winds (145 mph).

The 11.5 ton poles were installed at 6057 SW 198th Terrace, adjacent to the Pembroke Pines fire station. FPL is installing 321 new utility poles, including 149 concrete ones, in the area.

"These improvements are going to enable us to [have] a better system to withstand storms, to restore power more quickly following outages, and improve everyday reliability for our customers," said FPL spokesman David McDermitt.

The $3.6 million project is one of twelve in Broward County.
