Golden Glades going cashless starting Jan. 25

Drivers will pay electronically

MIAMI – The daily exchange of coins and a smile at the toll booth will soon be a ritual of the past at the Golden Glades Toll Plaza.

The turnpike will stop collecting cash starting Jan. 25th.

"So if you don't have Sunpass, get one. It's going to save you money," said Sonyha Rodriguez-Miller, of Florida's Turnpike Enterprise.

Drivers who don't get a Sunpass device will have to use Toll-By-Plate, a collection system that snaps a picture of your license plate and mails you a bill.

The Monday morning rush of commuters can expect traffic to be flowing freely.

But while these change may save drivers lots of time, some are concerned about the employees that work in these toll booths.

"Some of them are planning to retire, we have been able to find positions for some of them in other locations and they have known about this conversion for at least two years," said Rodriguez-Miller.

Meanwhile, the ramp to Southbound I-95 from the Palmetto will close at 10 p.m. and will open up again at 5 a.m.

These overnight closures will continue for about four weeks.
