Health and Human Services secretary talks health care changes

Kathleen Sebelius discusses changes coming under Affordable Care Act

MIAMI ā€“ Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of Health and Human Services, stopped in Miami on Tuesday to discuss what's changing under the Affordable Care Act.

Insurance under the Affordable Care Act, sometimes called "Obamacare," becomes available in Florida on Oct. 1.

Sebelius was part of a panel at Miami Dade College to discuss the upcoming health care changes with invited community leaders, media, and students. She explained what Floridians face since the state is one of 23 that didn't expand its Medicaid program.

"If you're below 100 percent of poverty, you do not qualify for a tax credit in the marketplace, and frankly, you probably can't afford the policies certainly without a tax credit," said Sebelius. "Out of the 3.5 million uninsured Floridians who are eligible for new coverage, about a little under 2 million would be Medicaid eligible."

Miami Dade College plans to host more seminars about the upcoming changes. For video FAQs and phone numbers to call about the upcoming health care reform, click here.
