HIALEAH – The flicker of a candle now lights a photo of Carlos Gavilanes. His smile and their friendship are what his wife will never forget.
"I miss him dearly. He was not only my husband but he was a father, he was a friend. He loved us so much. This has been heartbreaking for all us," said Jennifer Kharrazian.
One week ago Friday, Carlos and his 9 year-old son never knew that they would spend their final moments together boxing at a gym in Miami
By 6:33 p.m., Kharrazian was texting him to come home for pizza.
"He wrote back at like 6:38, stating Carlito had to do a few more sit-ups, he's finishing, and I'll be home," said Kharrazian.
But by that time, Pedro Vargas was already shot two victims at a Hialeah apartment complex. Building managers Italo and Samira Pisciotti were both dead.
Carlos Gavilanes would be Vargas' third victim as the crazed gunman shot senselessly from the balcony at first responders.
"I see my son crying on top of his body. He was like in shock. He didn't know what to do," said Kharrazian. "I went outside to call for help because there were already people there -- ambulances, firefighters, paramedics -- and then I was like, 'please, please save him,' and he said, 'I'm sorry miss, he's already dead."
One week later, Gavilanes' widow is sure of one thing: "He saved my son. He told him to run."
