Historic Little Havana nightclub to re-open

Ball & Chain jazz club to open its doors 57 years later

MIAMI – Only in Little Havana can you go from mixing drinks to playing dominoes.

The blend of old school and new age is exactly what the revamped Ball & Chain bar is all about. Co-owner, Bill Fuller says the original location is perfect as it's surrounded by Miami landmarks like the Tower Theater and Domino park.

The popular 1950's jazz spot is opening its doors after 57 years with a rustic vibe but hipster atmosphere.

Fuller says, "It's a place that really calls back to a different era when Miami was a little bit of a slower pace, but also speaks to the Cuban culture -- the art and the music that's embodied in this neighborhood right now."

Old play bills from artists like Count Basie and Louis Armstrong grace the walls as the new staff learns the ropes. The space transforms you, and nothing is as classic as the "mojito criollo."

Head "cantinero," or bartender, Danny Valdez, drew inspiration for the cocktail menu from a trip to Cuba incorporating a traditional item. The pastelito daquiri fuses white rum with the flavors of a Guava pastry.

The owners found an original sign from 1957 announcing Jam Session Sundays which is now displayed inside. Jam Sessions will be making a comeback from their 3,000 square-foot court yard.

Ball & Chain officially opens Thursday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.
