Hit-and-run victim speaks to Local 10

'Everything happens for a reason,' hit-and-run victim says

MIAMI – A man who lost one of his legs in a hit-and-run accident says he is lucky to be alive.

On Thursday, Jonathan Cordero, 24, spoke about the horrifying ordeal from his hospital bed at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Last month, Cordero was waiting for a bus on West 49th Street and 16th Avenue when a driver plowed into him.

"All I remember was the light and a force hitting me -- boom!" he said.

Cordero was awake when he realized his left leg was missing.

"All I remember was me screaming 'Help me, help me. Don't just look at me.' I looked down and all I saw was blood and bones," he said.

A man calmed him down until help arrived.

Cordero feared he would die if he lost consciousness, so he started thinking about his mother and two sisters.

"I love her very much. And she is my everything right now. She's been with me since day one," Cordero said about his sister who held his hand during the interview.

John Ranieri was killed in the crash. Cordero says the 41-year-old was sitting on the bus bunch and tried to jump out of the way.

Henry Paz, 28, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death and injury.

"I am angry, but at the same time it's how it happened and God knows how to fix it," Cordero said.

He will undergo several months of therapy at Jackson Memorial Hospital. His family hopes to get him fitted with a prosthetic leg and they could use financial help.
