Miami-Dade County Public Schools also named in suit

MIAMI – A lawsuit has been filed against a former Miami-Dade County teacher who pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with a 16-year-old student.

Bresnniel Jansen pleaded guilty in September to three counts of unlawful sexual activity with certain minors and two counts of electronic transmission of material harmful to minors.

Jansen, who was a math teacher at South Dade High School, was arrested in January after he admitted to having sex with the student, police said.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, seeks in excess of $15,000 in damages and a jury trial. Miami-Dade County Public Schools is also named in the suit.

An attorney for the family of the student claims the school district allowed Jansen to continue to teach without supervision after receiving a sexual harassment and inappropriate contact complaint in 2008 by the parents of another child.

The lawsuit also claims that the school district refused to grant the student's request to transfer to another school and instead placed her at a school directly across the street from where Jansen lived.

As part of his plea agreement, Jansen agreed to serve 10 years of probation and cannot teach again.
