Police officer walks out of Miami-Dade jail after son shoots himself at home

Schools police officer faces charge of child neglect with great bodily harm

MIAMI – Stephanie Alondra Jerez, an officer with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, used a bag to hide her face after walking out of the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Monday.

Jerez, 25, was allegedly cooking in the kitchen when her 3-year-old son grabbed her gun and shot himself in the foot on Sunday afternoon at their home in Homestead, police said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel flew the boy to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, and Homestead police officers arrested Jerez on a charge of child neglect with great bodily harm.

Jerez’s employer relieved her of duty. The gun the boy shot himself with was not her work-issued firearm, police said.

A judge set Jerez’s bond at $5,000 on Monday morning and ordered her to avoid having guns in her home when children are present. Court records show her arraignment hearing was set for 9 a.m., on May 28.

The Florida Department of Children and Families was also involved. Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Carlos Lopez was set to preside over the case.
