Man accused of breaking into Big Pine Motel

Deputies arrest 61-year-old Mark Moses

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – A 61-year-old man was arrested Monday morning after police say he broke into a room at the Big Pine Motel.

Mark Moses tried to check into the motel Sunday night, but his credit card was declined and he didn't have enough cash, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. At 6 a.m. the following morning, a guest reported a loud noise coming from room 22 and broken glass outside of the room.

The motel owner knocked on the door of room 22 to check on it. He said a man opened the door and then quickly closed it.

Two deputies responded and knocked on the door, police say. Moses answered the door naked. Inside the room, they saw that Moses had covered the broken window with a towel and a picture.

Moses used a coral rock to break the window, police say. He also took a steam cleaning machine from one of the maid's closets, and deputies found cleaning supplies, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, prescription pills, cold medicine, wet clothing and marijuana strewn all over the room.

Moses was charged with defrauding an innkeeper, criminal mischief, burglary, theft, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. He was booked into jail.
