Responding officers found the victim lying in the hallway of the home in a puddle of blood. A semiautomatic handgun was found on a bed in one of the rooms.

The younger Reyes was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he died the next day.

Detectives interviewed the victim's mother and girlfriend, who were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

According to the report, the girlfriend, Emily Robinson, told detectives that she and the victim had been drinking and dancing with his parents, when the elder Reyes began yelling at his son.

She said she didn't understand what they were saying because they were speaking in Spanish.

Robinson said the father grabbed a gun from inside a bedroom and she quickly stood in between the victim and his father in an attempt to separate them.

Robinson told detectives that the victim asked his father, "You're really going to shoot me?" She said the elder Reyes pointed the gun at his son and shot him one time in the head.

The victim's mother, Vivian Ramirez, told a similar story, but claimed that her husband told their son to leave because he was being disrespectful to his girlfriend, the report said. She said her son slapped her husband, at which point he grabbed the gun and shot him.

According to detectives, the elder Reyes and his wife both said they were planning a birthday party for their grandson when things took a turn for the worse.

Detectives said Reyes Sr. claimed that his son was being disrespectful and he told him to calm down. He said his son was becoming increasingly aggressive so he grabbed the gun in an attempt to calm his son down.

The report states that the suspect claimed that his son punched him several times in the face and knocked off his glasses, while his wife stood between them.

Police said Reyes Sr. admitted that he shot his son in the head, but said that he did not point the gun toward the victim and that the gun "somehow went off" during their struggle.

Police said the suspect claimed that he tried to help his son after the shooting, but there was no visible blood on the suspect's white T-shirt.

The elder Reyes was arrested and remains at the Broward County Jail.
