HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Police arrested a 42-year-old man accused of walking into a home that wasn't his and making himself a bowl of cereal while the homeowner was sleeping in a back room.
"Maybe he tried a bunch of other doors. I don't know," said Clive Taylor.
About 7:15 a.m. Friday, Taylor went to work and left his partner sleeping in the back room. He admitted that he forgot to lock the door.
"You know, you do it sometimes. I was in a hurry, somebody was in the house, [I] didn't think it was a big deal," he said. "Apparently, it was a big deal."
A few minutes later, surveillance video at Taylor's home shows a man walk up to the porch, walk inside, turn on the light, look around, then head for the kitchen.
"He took one of these bowls, [and] poured himself some cereal," said Taylor.
The video shows the man eating the cereal inside the dining room, then picking up one of the cameras.
"That was my feeling," said Taylor. "This guy has got to be so completely out of his mind to walk up to somebody's house and open the door and come in and do what he did."
Video also shows the man heading to the bathroom.
"The one thing I can say is he was very neat," said Taylor.
Taylor's partner later woke up and found the man, identified by police as Nicholas Hawkins, on his couch. He told him to leave before he called police.
Officers found Hawkins (pictured) a few blocks away and arrested him. He was charged with burglary and illegal possession of Xanax.
"It's a cheap, valuable lesson because it could have been a lot worse," added Taylor.
