Man steals candy, soda, deodorant from Fort Lauderdale home, police say

Police: Neighbors spotted suspect loading suitcase with stolen goods

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – One person was taken into police custody after residents in a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood told police they saw him removing items from one of their neighbor's homes.

Police arrived at the scene Thursday morning and found the suspect close to the home on Southeast 14 Street off South Federal Highway.

Police said the man was loading stolen goods into a suitcase, but actually wasn't going for any big-ticket items. Instead the suspect allegedly packed his suitcase with candy, soda, deodorant and small household goods.

The homeowner, who arrived at the scene a bit later, told Local 10 News he recognized the suspect as a man who asked him about the area three days ago. He said the suspect told him he was interested in moving to the neighborhood.

According to the homeowner, his neighbor called police after he heard the suspect smash his back sliding glass door with a large piece of concrete.

Police said the suspect filled both the victim's rolling suitcase and a neighbor's rolling trashcan with stolen items.

Police have not released the suspect's identity at this time.
