KENDALL, Fla. – A man who escaped from police custody in southwest Miami-Dade County has been caught.
Jeremy Rojas, 20, escaped from a parked squad car at the Miami-Dade Police Department's Hammocks District station early Thursday morning.
"We knew he was handcuffed behind his back and somehow while in the vehicle, he was able to bring those handcuffs to the front and then have access to the outside handle," Detective Alvaro Zabaleta told Local 10.
Rojas had been arrested on a charge of cocaine possession.
His escape prompted students to be diverted away from a local elementary school. Parents of students at Claude Pepper Elementary were told to drop off their children at nearby Oliver Hoover Elementary as police searched the area.
Police eventually apprehended Rojas in the back yard of a house off Southwest 97th Street and 145th Place. He was apprehended about 8 a.m.
Rojas is expected to face additional charges in connection with the escape.
