Margate police investigate apparent murder-suicide

Bodies of Robert Halik, Jindra Halik found inside apartment

MARGATE, Fla. – A SWAT standoff ended in Margate with two people dead Saturday night.

Police say a man made a 911 call just after 7 p.m., threatening to shoot people and then kill himself.

When investigators responded, a man bolted himself inside an apartment in the 1700 block of Northwest 80th Avenue near Coral Square Mall.

A negotiator was called to the scene but reported hearing gunshots a short time later. When police entered the apartment, they found the bodies of 58-year-old Robert Halik and his mother, 88-year-old Jindra Halik.
