The award winners were determined "using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants in destinations worldwide over a 12-month period," TripAdvisor's website states.

Miami dropped 13 spots from its 2013 ranking. Orlando, the only other Florida city to make the list, dropped five spots to 10.

The 2014 rankings showed a rise in popularity among Texas and cities in the south. Houston jumped 13 spots to No. 12, the largest of any in the U.S. rankings. New Orleans and Charleston, S.C., also moved up the list. Atlanta and Nashville, Tenn., made the list for the first time in its six-year history.

The top three U.S. cities -- New York, Chicago and San Francisco, respectively -- also made the Top 25 Travelers' Choice World Destinations ranking.
