MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday authorized $4.2 billion in bonds to rebuild leaky and old water and sewer lines, pumping stations, and water treatment plants.
The funding approved includes $1.6 billion for upgrades and repairs, $15 million for maintenance, and another $1.8 million in federal fines and federally-mandated oversight.

The repairs will bring the county's system in compliance with the federal Clean Water Act.
To cover the bonding, commissioners voted to raise water and sewer bills 8 percent, or about $4 a month to the average water bill. The rate hike begins Oct. 1.
