New athletic field opens in Liberty Square

Field includes dugouts, new fields, irrigation system

MIAMI – A new athletic field opened Wednesday in Liberty Square, a housing development in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood

The new field at Northwest 63rd Street and 14th Avenue includes an irrigation system, leveled outfield, layered sod, infield clay, and dugouts. It cost the city $38,220.70, to build.

"We're really happy that we have this," said Elaine Black with the Liberty City Trust. "Before, they had to go to Northwestern High School to practice or have to go some place else just for kids to play, so now the kids can play right here in their own area."

Future plans for the field include a fence around the perimeter.

"Well, we're still finishing up the field," said Miami Parks and Recreation Director Juan Pascual. "The field primarily will be used for kids baseball. It can also be used for multiple other purposes, like flag football, for example."

Parks officials hope to have the field finished by Thanksgiving.
