BSO: Man shoots, kills robber

Armed robber shot after scuffle, deputies say

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A man wrestled a gun away from an armed robber, then shot and killed him with it, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened at the Conch Key Villa Apartments on Northeast 4th Avenue and 1st Street about 5 a.m. Tuesday.

According to BSO, the man found the armed robber inside his garage.

"He told detectives he was able to wrestle the gun away from the suspect and shot and kill the man," said Dani Moschella with the Broward Sheriff's Office. "So that man is apparently an adult and he's dead in the homeowner's driveway."

"Totally shocked that a homicide happens in our backyard. It's kind of scary," said Danyiel Louis, who owns a nearby daycare center.

Louis gave BSO surveillance video showing the robber's accomplice leaving the area in a black car. The car may have been a newer-model Nissan, Mazda or Acura.

"We have the cameras that show 1st Street. Whatever we see, we will hand over so they can figure out what happened," she added. "It's my husband that looked at it, so he shared with the detectives. I think he saw, maybe, a black car speeding by or something."

"It's just unclear why this man would have been standing there with a gun at 5:15 in the morning. I'm sure the investigation will reveal later today whether he was there to rob the homeowner, whether they knew each other or what exactly happened," said Moschella.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the location of the vehicle can report information to BSO at 954-321-4210 or to CrimeStoppers of Broward County at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
