Man injured in fire at high-rise apartment in Fort Lauderdale

Another resident treated for smoke inhalation

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man was injured in a fire at a high-rise apartment building in Fort Lauderdale.

It happened late Tuesday night at the Coral Ridge Towers at 3233 NE 34th St.

Firefighters said the fire started in an apartment on the 14th floor of the 16-story building.

The man inside that apartment was rushed to Holy Cross Hospital in critical condition.

Another resident was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters evacuated the building as a precaution, temporarily displacing more than 100 residents. Firefighters said some residents got trapped walking down the stairs.

"It's comforting to know the building is as well-made as it is so that the fire was so self-contained and that the response was so swift," resident Rick Reddington told Local 10's Ben Kennedy.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
