Panera Bread makes worldwide changes after Local 10 News investigation

Scissors now being used to open bags after woman says she found razor blade in soup

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Panera Bread said it will no longer use razor blade-type tools in its kitchens.

As Local 10 News first reported last month, a Homestead woman claimed to have found a razor blade at the bottom of her lemon orzo soup.

Wyteeshia McRoberts said she picked up lunch for herself and some co-workers at the Panera Bread on Campbell Drive at Florida's Turnpike when she saw something shiny.

"I don't think they took it as seriously in the beginning," McRoberts said.

McRoberts said she started freaking out, because she'd eaten more than half the soup. She said Panera Bread didn't believe her at first.

"They said that they did their investigation and they found nothing," she said.

Now, after investigating the incident, Panera Bread said there have been changes made.

"Reports of this nature are exceedingly rare, and Panera responds with tremendous caution and swift, thoughtful action," Panera Bread said in a statement to Local 10. "Bag openers with sharp edges are used in our bakery-cafes to prepare soups. After a reported incident in a Miami bakery-cafe, we immediately conducted a review of all such tools systemwide. We decided to discontinue the use of these bag openers and, instead, use scissors. This change is immediate and systemwide."
