MIAMI -

A police officer shot a 41-year-old man who tried using a pick axe to break into a home in Miami, police said Tuesday.

Police arrested Jason O'Brien, who was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital after the shooting.

O'Brien tried breaking into 4280 SW 10th Street about 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest affidavit. He broke several windows in the back of the house, then reached through one to unlock the back door.

Still carrying the pick axe, O'Brien entered the home, police said. The resident, her two children, and two other family members ran outside and got into a car.

O'Brien followed them, began screaming, and hit another vehicle parked in the driveway with the pick axe, police said. The family drove off and called police.

When an officer arrived, he told O'Brien to drop the pick axe, according to the arrest affidavit. O'Brien continued to walk toward the officer, who then shot him.

Upon his release, O'Brien will be charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, armed burglary, and criminal mischief.
