Police chase burglary suspects from Collier County

3 caught after police chase

LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Police took three men into custody Tuesday following a chase from Collier County to Broward County.

Sky 10 picked up the chase in the Melrose Park neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday. They nearly hit Mike Tucker, who was leaving his home at the time.

"When I was backing out, all I saw was a black car shoot past by my house so I slammed on my brakes," he said. "I'm blessed. I had to be blessed. God was on my side."

Three men got out of the Chrysler 300 minutes later at Northwest 8th Court and 33rd Way in Lauderhill and ran away.

"I was watching it on TV and then I heard the helicopters and people starting come out and we were just like, 'What's going on?'" said Eric Harden. "As soon as I walk out, it's right in front of my house."

Police took all three men -- 22-year-old Jeremy Thomas; 22-year-old Darius Hall; and, 19-year-old James Steel -- into custody shortly afterwards.

"I'm watching everything," said Eric Jones. "It was crazy."

"It's scary, scary to come home and see all this going on," added Mamie Gomillion. "I mean real, real scary."

Before the chase began, the three burglarized a home in the 200 block of Cypress Way West, police said. When a deputy tried pulling them over on Interstate 75, they kept driving and reached speeds up to 100 mph.

Officers found items stolen from the home inside the car, police said.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office will file charges of unoccupied burglary and grand theft against the trio. Thomas, the driver, will also face one count of fleeing and eluding.

Two Fort Lauderdale police cruisers and another car were involved in a crash at Northwest 27th Avenue and 6th Street.

"There just simply was not enough room for both vehicles to continue westbound in that area," said Fort Lauderdale Police Det. DeAnna Greenlaw.

The two police officers involved in the crash were released from the hospital later in the day.
