Suspect arrested after high speed chase

MIAMI – A man was taken into custody Tuesday evening after he led police on a chase down I-95 and through the streets of Miami.

Guillermo Alvarez-Mendez (47) who police say burglarized a car in the Home Depot parking lot at 1951 South Street Road in West Park, led police from I-95 in Broward County, into the Overtown area of Miami, over to Little Havana, and finally stopped at 16th Avenue and Southwest 1st Street after two collisions.

When Alvarez-Mendez's vehicle came to a stop, he was seen running from the crash, into nearby apartments, leaping from rooftop to rooftop as police searched for him.

People living in the area said police were shouting for them to stay indoors.

"They told me to get in the house," said Luis Calvo, who lives about a block from thee final crash.

With the help of police K9s, the suspect was apprehended in the back area of an apartment on Southwest 2nd Street near 16th Avenue.

The drivers and passengers in those vehicles that the suspect collided with suffered minor injuries and were treated on the scene.

Alvarez-Mendez is being charged with fleeing and eluding and leaving the scene of a traffic crash with injuries, according to Miami-Dade Police Department.
