Miami-Dade police search for 2 men in assault, robbery

Police: Men attack 91-year-old mother, 63-year-old daughter

MIAMI – Police are asking for the public's help in identifying two men who assaulted and robbed two women inside their home.

The incident happened at 3 p.m. Thursday at the home at 331 Southwest 87th Path in southwest Miami-Dade.

Authorities said two men, posing as delivery men, forced their way into the home and brutally attacked the 91-year-old mother and her 63-year-old daughter who live in the home alone.

Local 10's Baron James reports the men tied up the two with duct tape, ransacked the home, stole cash and possibly other items.

"They've been identified as Karla Vigon-Montenegro, a 63-year-old woman, and Berta Garcia, a 91-year-old female," said Det. Alvaro Zabaleta of Miami-Dade police.

Vigon-Montenegro managed to free herself after the men left and called 911.

Miami-Dade police described the one of the men as Hispanic, around 40 to 50 years old and has a beard. Police described the other man as Hispanic and wore a long-sleeved shirt.

Fernando Fernandez shared his shock and disbelief, a sentiment felt throughout the southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood Thursday night.

"This is amazing. I don't believe it," said Fernandez. "I never saw the lady. I saw the daughter a couple of times. Friendly people."

But friendliness became fear, Miami-Dade police said, as the home invaders ransacked the second floor of the house.

"They battered the victims and took an undetermined amount of cash," said Zabaleta. "They fled in the victim's car."

Police said the men then stole their white 2010 Lexus with Florida license plate 993-XUJ. As police investigate the crime, they need the public's help tracking down the car along with the two robbers.

"Obviously these are individuals that are brazen to batter a 91-year-old lady," Zabaleta said. "It's unheard of."

"This neighborhood is very, very quiet," said Fernandez. "I never feel like something was gonna happen like this."

Both women were taken to a local hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
