Police search for fraudster with ties to Broward, Miami-Dade counties

Detectives: Scam stems from Craigslist ad listed by 'David Spencer of eBay Motors'

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – The Boynton Beach Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying a man who fraudulently transferred $1,500 from a Green Dot Money Pack card to a Money Gram order at a Walmart.

Detectives said the fraudster then tried unsuccessfully to make purchases at an Exxon Mobil in Fort Lauderdale, a Starbucks in Doral and at the Asian Hibachi Buffet in Hialeah.

Detectives said this scam stems from a Craigslist ad listed by "David Spencer of eBay Motors."

A North Carolina man called police saying he paid $1,500 for a 2001 New Holland skid steer loader that was advertised on Craigslist. He bought three Green Dot
Money Pack cards at $500 each and called the seller to  provide him with the numbers on the back of the cards.

He told police he became suspicious after Spencer told him he needed an additional $1,000 before the skid steer could be insured and shipped.

Detectives said a simple Google search turned up dozens of websites warning people of identical scams by Spencer.

Detectives said in the Green Dot Money Pack cards were activated in Miami on Aug. 19. and the funds were then transferred to the Money Gram order on Aug. 27 at a Walmart at 3200 Old Boynton Road.
