Search suspended for missing Cuban migrants

Migrants disappeared Monday

MIAMI – Coast Guard rescue crews suspended their search Tuesday for two suspected Cuban migrants who disappeared Monday during an illegal voyage to the U.S.

The search began Monday after a good Samaritan contacted the Coast Guard, reporting that he found a man aboard a homemade vessel about seven miles southwest of Key Biscayne.

That man was transported to Mercy Miami Hospital for treatment.

During the search, one body was located north of where the survivor was found and sent to the coroner's office.

Rescue crews searched a total of 1,491 square nautical miles for 25 hours in the effort to locate the two missing men.

"We want to express our deepest condolences to the friends and families who lost loved ones in this tragic incident," said Marilyn Fajardo, deputy public affairs officer.
