Second raccoon found in Coconut Creek dumpster

Raccoon found in dumpster where another raccoon was killed with 2x4

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – A raccoon trapped in a Coconut Creek dumpster was rescued Wednesday after fighting, hissing and even diving under piles of wood to hide out.

In the end, however, the critter was safety scooped up by South Florida Wildlife Rescue.

"There was no way this raccoon was getting out. That is a really deep dumpster," said Robbie Ruderman.

As it turns out, it's the same dumpster off N. State Road 7 where cell phone video was shot showing a different raccoon hit by a piece of wood. It's too graphic to show, but you could see the critter squirm, scratch and later die from the blow.

Police blame 26-year-old Joseph Amico, who was issued a notice to appear in court. Wednesday's raccoon is healthy and was released right after capture. South Florida Wildlife Rescue points out that this is the right way to handle a case when an animal is trapped and can't get out, call the experts.

"They are not trying to attack people, just opportunists, looking for free food in dumpsters," said Ruderman. "Happens all the time, they call us all the time."
