Wings for Life World Run

SUNRISE, Fla. – South Florida has been chosen to host a branch of a worldwide run that will have participants around the globe raising money to cure paralysis.

The Wings For Life World Run will be held simultaneously in 40 cities worldwide on May 4, 2014. Early Tuesday, it was announced that the city of Sunrise was one of only four U.S. locations selected as a host.

As runners line up for a 6 a.m. start time at the BB&T Center this May, thousands of runners worldwide will also be getting ready to hit the pavement. All 40 races begin at the same time. The early start time in Sunrise coincides with a midday start for those running in Europe and an early evening start for those in Asia.

The South Florida route will take runners through Sunrise and Weston, then along U.S. 27 toward the Florida Everglades.

There's no fixed distance or finish line for runners taking part. Instead, participants worldwide are followed by a moving finish line known as the 'catcher car.'

The cars will begin following runners 30 minutes after the start of the races. The goal is to stay ahead of the catcher car, in order to become the champion. A male and female from each race who covers the most distance before the catcher car gets to them will be crowned. Their distances will be compared to other winners around the world.

The other U.S. locations are Santa Clarita, Calif., Denver, Col., and Atlantic City, NJ.
