Some city leaders want to shut down Ultra Music Festival

Security guard critically injured during event

MIAMI – The future of Ultra Music Festival in downtown Miami could be in jeopardy after a security guard was critically injured during the event.

Erica Mack was trampled Friday by a crowd that stormed the fences during the festival.

VOTE: Should Ultra remain in Miami?

Now Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado wants the event to move and get another venue.

"What happened this weekend is an event that could have been avoided," Regalado told Local 10. "The organizers of Ultra did not follow the police directive to reinforce the fence."

Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, who oversees the downtown district, also wants to pull the plug on the event next year.

He believes the crowds have grown too big over the years.

"You're putting a pinch access point and you're putting flimsy fencing up," Sarnoff said. "There is no way of policing these many people because we know about stampedes. They've happened in the past. Luckily, our police officers were able to handle it."

Ultra organizers released a statement, in part, that read: "Preliminary investigations show that the incident was caused by individuals not in possession of event tickets and who were determined to gain unauthorized entry. Every year the event organizers work collaboratively with police and other municipal partners along with the organizers' independent security partners to ensure the safety of all patrons, crew and working personnel."

Regalado said he plans to meet with commissioners this week to talk about what can be done to keep Ultra Music Festival out of Miami next year.

"They should move on and get another venue," he said.
